Local Places

Lanarkshire is strategically situated between Edinburgh and Glasgow and is one of Scotland's most diverse areas with a beautiful rural landscape and rich history. Its central location in the heart of the central lowlands of Scotland has allowed it to take full advantage of the main rail and road links to the rest of UK.

Local Volunteer Editors

Our goal is to have a section for each settlement in rural Lanarkshire, each one run by an editor who lives there - real information that you won't get in a normal guidebook. There are already a number of people who have started pages on their town or village, but there is still plenty of opportunity here for you to put your place on the map. Why not try a search and see if yours is here.

The area covers over 156,000 hectares and is bounded to the south by the Southern Uplands, encompassing part of the Lowther Hills , while to the east it touches the western extent of the Pentland Hills. To the west it meets Eaglesham Moor and to the north comes close to the more urbanised parts of South Lanarkshire. It is bisected by the main north-south M74 motorway and dissected by four river valleys and a network of tributaries. The prime one is the upper reaches of the Clyde Valley, while the others are the Avon Valley and the Douglas and Nethan Valleys.

The volunteer section leader for the PLACES section is John Mitchell, helped by volunteer editors who each represents his or her place.

Some places have microsites with more information and pictures, but we need help from people who know the area.
